Bulgarian President Favors EU-US Free Trade Agreement

Bulgaria’s economy would benefit from a free trade agreement between EU and USA, said Bulgarian President.

“Upon successful implementation of a trade agreement between EU and USA each family in the European Union would increase its annual income with more than EUR 540 and each American family with USD 650”, said Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev on Thursday in his opening address at “Transatlantic Economic Cooperation for Competitiveness and Growth: Bulgaria’s Perspective” conference organized by American Chamber of Commerce in Bulgaria.

Prospects for Bulgaria’s economy in the light of a possible free trade agreement signing between the EU and US is the topic of the one-day event.

“Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership” (TTIP) is a free trade agreement negotiated between the European Union and the United States. The negotiations aim at removing trade barriers (tariffs, unnecessary regulations, restrictions on investment, etc.) in a wide range of economic sectors as to make easier to buy and sell goods and services between the EU and the US.

“Trade agreement between EU and US would result in an increase in Bulgaria’s economic growth and more foreign investment”, said President Plevneliev.

Even though Visa restrictions for Bulgarians applied by US is an unsolved issue between the two countries, it does not undermine in any way good relations and strategic partnership between Bulgaria and the United States, pointed out the Bulgarian President in his address to the participants at the conference.
