Bulgaria's opposition center-right GERB party and the nationalists from Ataka are in agreement on the extension of the ban on agricultural land sale to foreigners.

Ataka leader Volen Siderov submitted a proposal in Parliament for the extension of the moratorium on agricultural land sale to foreigners, which expires at the end of 2013.

"The average price for an acre of agricultural land in Bulgaria for 2012-2013 is EUR 220, while in Northern Ireland it is 2 400, in Netherlands 2 930, in Italy 1 430, and in Belgium 1 705", commented Siderov, cited by OFFNews.

GERB MPs are also in favor of extending the ban, until Bulgaria's land prices become more competitive with European ones.

Earlier this month, PM Plamen Oresharski excluded the possibility of extending the moratorium, saying that it will not be in line with Bulgaria's agreements with the EU.

Oresharski believes lifting the ban would rather bring positive changes and fresh foreign investment in the country.
