The Bulgarian connection in the case of the young blonde girl found living in a Greek Roma settlement is a slander, believes the leader of Bulgaria's Roma party.

According to Tsvetelin Kanchev, leader of Euro Roma, Greece is simply trying to transfer the blame onto Bulgaria.

"This child does not have Roma genes. Its features are rather Russian or Anglo-Saxon", said Kanchev in the morning bloc of NovaTV.

DNA tests revealed that the child, known as Maria, aged about 4, was not related to the Roma couple with which she lived.

Greek police had suggested a possible connection with Bulgaria, from where the child could have been sold by her biological parents.

The two people posing as the girl's parents have been arrested and face charges of abducting a minor, as well as counts of falsifying identity documents.
