The speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Mihail Mikov, awarded Nobel laureate Luc Montagnier with an honorary plaque from the Parliament.

Montagnier, a French virologist, is credited for his key role in proving the innocence of 5 Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor, who were accused of deliberately infecting more than 400 Libyan children with HIV.

The comprehensive scientific reports by Luc Montagnier and Vittorio Colizzi, from the Pasteur Institute in Paris, proved beyond doubt that unhygienic medical practices fueled the outbreak.

The scientific evidence was ultimately thrown out, but drummed worldwide support for the release of the medics.

In 2007, after serving 8 years of their life-time prison sentences, the medics were freed. This was only possible due to the international diplomatic pressure on Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi.
