Bulgarian Court Rules to Keep Dogan Attacker in Custody

A Bulgarian court has ruled that Oktay Enimehmedov, the man who pointed a gas pistol at key politician Ahmed Dogan earlier this year, is to remain in custody.

While the Sofia City Court does not believe the suspect may hide, it reckons that he may commit another crime if not in custody.

The next sitting in the high-profile trial against Enimehmedov has been scheduled for October 21.

On January 19, police detained the 25-year-old ethnic Turkish man after he pointed a gas pistol at Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Ahmed Dogan as the latter was delivering his resignation speech at a party conference in Sofia. No shots were fired.

Enimehmedov was indicted on attempted murder charges. He was also charged with "indecent actions that are grossly violating the public order and showing clear lack of respect for society."

Dogan is yet to appear in court.
