The Bulgarian national football team has lost its final qualifying game 0:1 to the Czech Republic, forfeiting slim chances to qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

The Bulgarian team started out strongly the game, played at the Vassil Levski National Stadium in Sofia.

But the game quickly evened, as the Czechs applied pressure.

The first and only goal for the game fell quickly after midtime, scored in 51' by the Czech Republic's Borek Dockal.

In the 74' Bulgarian defender Petar Zanev was given a second yellow card and expelled from the game.

Friday Bulgaria lost its preceding qualifier 2:1 at an away match against Armenia, finishing the game with only 9 players.

Bulgaria thus ranked fourth in Europe's qualifiers Group B, with 13 points out of 10 games, behind Italy (22 pts), Denmark (16 pts), and the Czech Republic (15 pts).

The top ranked teams of Europe's 9 groups qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2014.

The best-ranked 8 second teams will go forward to form playoffs, with 4 of them qualifying.

Even if it won Tuesday's game against the Czech Republic and managed to rank second in Group B, the odds were that Bulgaria would be the worst second-ranked team and not make it to the playoffs anyway.
