Bulgarians Plan Anti-Govt Protest during Key World Cup Qualifier

Bulgarians plan to protest against the country’s embattled government during the key World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic in Sofia on Tuesday.

Anti-government protesters are to chant “Resignation!” in the fourteenth minute of the first and second half of the game.

The anti-government press service has noted that protesters fully support national football coach Lyuboslav Penev – and would only demand the resignation of the government.

It was on June 14 that the first in the record-long series of mass anti-corruption rallies took place in Bulgaria.

The demonstrations were prompted by the shocking appointment of shady media mogul Delyan Peevski as head of the country’s powerful State Agency for National Security. The appointment was canceled, but protesters proceeded to demand the government’s resignation over its suspected ties with oligarchs.

Bulgaria’s national football team still has an outside chance to qualify for a World Cup playoff if it defeats the Czech Republic tonight – and if games in other qualifying groups end favorably.
