Bulgarian Police to Investigate Blockade of PM's Motorcade

Bulgarian police authorities have announced they are to launch an investigation into the protesters who blocked Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski’s motorcade in Sofia last week.

Oresharski’s motorcade was temporarily blocked by protesters as he came out of the Sofia City Art Gallery where he attended the opening of an exhibition entitled "Jules Pascin – From Vidin to Paris” last Tuesday.

The Sofia directorate of the Bulgarian Interior Ministry has now announced that it will seek to identify the individuals who stood in the way of Oresharski's vehicle in downtown Sofia.

News website Offnews.bg says it has been asked to hand in pictures and videos of protesters to police.

Oresharski, who took over as Prime Minister at the end of May, has been booed at public events on a number of occasions over the past weeks.

Monday marks the 123th consecutive day of relentless anti-corruption protests in EU’s poorest member state.

The rallies strengthened last week when the Constitutional Court controversially decided to allow lawmaker and shady media tycoon Delyan Peevski to return to Parliament.

It was the appointment of Peevski as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) that triggered the mass protests on June 14 - exactly four months ago. The appointment was canceled, but protesters proceeded to demand the government’s resignation over its suspected ties with oligarchs.
