The research potential of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences is a vital resource for the country, stated BAS chair Stefan Vodenicharov at the Monday celebration of the institution's 144th anniversary.
The ceremony was attended by Bulgarian Parliament Speaker Mihail Mikov and Deputy-PM and Minister of Justice Zinaida Zlatanova.
"In the conditions of a universal crisis, it is necessary that we work together. Investment in science is investment in our country's future," said BAS president Vodenicharov.
At the same time, Vodenicharov lamented the outflow of researchers from the largest and most productive science institution in Bulgaria, which for years has been facing grave budget cuts.
"The economic crisis, as well as some not well judged actions by Bulgarian politicians have made it so that Bulgarian science and culture feel like being in a state of emigration," said Parliament Speaker Mikov in his speech.
In official addresses sent to the Academy, both Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev and PM Plamen Oresharski vowed to make research and innovations key priorities in Bulgarian state policy.
"BAS is fulfilling its mission with responsibility and dignity, irrespective of the turbulences of our times," said Deputy-PM Zlatanova.
In his official address, BAS chair Vodenicharov touched on both the Academy's history, and on its continuing contribution to Bulgarian intellectual and economic life.
