380 people have been detained after massive rioting in the Biryulyovo district in the southern part of the Russian capital Moscow Sunday.

The entire Moscow police were put under alert in a so-called "Vulkan" (Volcano) operation, after thousands gathered in protest in the southern neighborhood.

People started assembling in front of the offices of local authorities Saturday, after the Thrusday night stab killing of a 25-year-old man who was going back home with his girlfriend.

But tensions started to flare Sunday, when thousands gathered, with some going ahead with smashing shop windows.

Many said they believed that the man was murdered by a migrant from the Caucasus or Central Asia, reports RIA Novosti.

Rioters trageted shopping outlets employing immigrants, while other protesters requested tougher immigration control.

At least 6 police officers and some 20 protesters have been wounded in the Biryulyovo clashes, say authorities.

Police have deployed forces in places they believe might turn in hotspots for similar unrest - in particular fruit and vegetable markets - in the following days.
