Powerful Earthquake Jolts Greece's Crete

An strong earthquake shook the island of Crete in southern Greece on Saturday, with initial reports of material damage.

There have been no reports of casualties, according to international media.

According to the US Geological Survey the quake had a 6.4 magnitude, while the Athens Observatory, quoted by the state-run Athens News Agency, gave it a 6.2 magnitude.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the quake took place at 4:12 p.m. (1312 GMT), 68 kilometers (42 miles) west of the city of Chania, in Crete, and 279 kilometers (172 miles) south of Athens.
