Head Judge Withdraws in Bulgarian Ex-Interior Minister Trial

The high-profile "obstruction of justice" trial against Bulgaria's ex-Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov failed to start after the presiding judge withdrew from the case.

The motives of judge Dimitrina Angelova are tabloid allegations, accusing her of close ties with the defending lawyer Menko Menkov.

Tsvetanov commented that for him and his lawyers, it is of no concern who the judges are, as long as the trial is quick and transparent.

The ex-Minister is charged with refusing to endorse 6 prosecutor's requests to grant a permit for the use of special surveillance devices during an investigation against the former head of Veliko Tarnovo's regional anti-mafia unit.
