Notorious Bulgarian MP Fails to Show Up for Work after Reinstatement

Controversial Bulgarian lawmaker Delyan Peevski failed to attend the Parliament’s sitting on Wednesday, a day after the Constitutional Court reinstated him.

The news is not surprising, as the secretive media mogul has shown up to Parliament extremely rarely since he was first elected as MP in 2009.

A total of 122 members of Bulgaria’s 240-seat Parliament registered for Wednesday’s sitting. The opposition center-right GERB party decided to boycott the sitting once again.

Bulgarian anti-government protesters gathered for a new rally outside the Parliament in Sofia early on Wednesday.

Peevski's appointment as Chair of the State Agency for National Security (DANS) on June 14 unleashed a series of mass protests which were not appeased by the prompt cancellation of the Parliament's decision. Although the scandalous appointment was cancelled, the protesters demanded the resignation of the government over ties with oligarchs.

The Constitutional Court controversially reinstated Peevski as legislator on Tuesday, triggering fresh clashed between demonstrators and police.
