EU’s Interior Ministers are to discuss the influx of refugees to the bloc in Luxembourg on Tuesday, with the Lampedusa fishing boat tragedy expected to be in the focus.

A boat packed with around 500 Eritrean and Somali migrants capsized and sank near Italy’s Lampedusa on Thursday after its captain set fire to a T-shirt to signal distress to coast guards, sparking panic on board. Emergency services have recovered 194 bodies so far and 155 survivors were plucked from the waves.

The Ministers are also expected to discuss whether additional aid should be provided for the countries that are struggling to cope with an ongoing refugee influx from Syria, according to the Bulgarian National Radio. These member states include Bulgaria, Cyprus and Greece.

Bulgaria, which shares a border with Turkey, is undertaking measures to accommodate all potential refugees that might arrive from Syria seeking shelters from the devastating civil war conflict. Bulgarian officials have said the country may have to provide shelter for as many as 11,000 Syrians by the end of the year.
