Bulgaria’s Reformist Bloc, an opposition formation consisting of mostly right-wing parties, has strongly criticized the Socialist-led government over its intention to lift the full smoking ban in closed public spaces.

In a statement, the Reformist Bloc has accused the government of planning a “lobbyist move”, suggesting that “certain business circles” have vested interests in abandoning the ban.

Moreover, the Bloc believes the move intends to distract the public’s attention from more vital problems, such as the growing refugee influx in the country.

“As a conclusion, the Reformist Bloc warns you that this government is dangerous for your health and calls for its resignation so that immediate early elections can take place,” the statement says.

Spas Panchev, Deputy Chair of the parliamentary group of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, said Thursday that the full smoking ban in enclosed public places must be dropped before winter.

The ban was introduced in June 2012 by the previous center-right GERB government.
