Bulgaria's European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, who is in charge of humanitarian aid and crisis response, will visit Friday refugee shelters in the capital Sofia.

Georgieva will see firsthand the conditions of the shelters in the Sofia suburbs of Vrazhdebna and Voenna Rampa (Military Ramp).

The Commissioner will also visit the headquarters of the Bulgarian Red Cross to discuss with its management the extend of the humanitarian crisis and what the Red Cross has done and will do to assist the refugees.

Bulgaria has experienced a refugee wave recently due to the conflict in Syria. The capacity of shelters has already been exceeded, but it remains unclear if the EU will provide financial assistance.

The number of asylum seekers is currently estimated at 5 500, with 500 of them being children. The capacity of all shelters is 5 000.

Some of the children are unaccompanied by adults. Their estimated number is 180+.
