At least 94 people have been confirmed dead and around 200 are believed missing after a boat carrying as many as 500 African asylum seekers caught fire and sank off the Italian coast.

More than 150 have been rescued, according to officials.

There are reports that a fire broke out on board, before the boat sank.

Most of those on board were from Eritrea and Somalia, said the UNHCR.

The accident was the latest in many drownings involving migrants travelling on rickety fishing boats or rubber dinghies in the Mediterranean, where thousands have died in recent years.
