3 Million Bulgarians Inactive in 2012 – Eurostat

Nearly half million Bulgarians aged between 55 and 64 years were out of the workforce and outside the labor market in 2012, according to Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

This is valid for 40% of men and 55% of women in this age group.

In 2012, about 3 million Bulgarians have been inactive and retirees were slightly under half of them. Economically inactive women were 1.7 million; men were 1.3 million.

Bulgaria has ageing population with 1.3 million retirees in a country of 7 million, and the group over the age of 65 is the most inactive.

According to Eurostat data, the most economically inactive people, aged 55-64 years, were men in Slovenia (56%), Hungary (53%) and Belgium (52%). The lowest percentage rate of inactive men was registered in Sweden (29%) and Germany (26%). Women of 55-64 years of age are the most inactive in Malta (83%), Slovenia (73%) and Greece (70%), while the lowest indicators in this age group are reported for women in Sweden (27%), Estonia (35%) and Finland (38%).
