South Stream Gas Pipeline Will Not Cause Environmental Damage to Bulgaria's Coastline - CEO

The South Stream gas pipeline will cause no environmental damage to Bulgaria's Black Sea city of Varna, according to Oleg Aksyutin, CEO of South Stream Transport.

In an interview for Presa daily, he assures that the Pasha Dere beach near Varna, where the South Stream gas pipeline is planned to surface, will not be damaged by the project.

He suggests that the pipe will not be visible on the surface of the water.

The South Stream Transport company is in charge of the construction of the sea section of the gas pipeline and the 3-km land section near Varna, according to reports of dnevnik.bg.

"The pipeline will not be visible on the surface during exploitation and after the completion of construction works, the ecology of the Varna coast will not be harmed...On land, a small section of around 3km is planned, which will pass under the Pasha Dere beach to the compressor station located in the heart of the country," the Russian expert says.

He informs that the results of all environmental surveys will be published in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report due in October.

Aksyutin assures that people will be able to receive information they need at reception centers which are to be set up in Varna, as well as online.
