Bulgarian President Voices Commitment on Sustainable Development

Bulgarian President Rosen Plevneliev asserted that the United Nations member states have an obligation to work for sustainable economic development after 2015.

The head of state spoke at a UN round table on the assessment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). He pointed out that even though the MDGs were initially drafted for the period until 2015, the responsibility of governments does not end then.

“As a member of the European Union, Bulgaria contributes to the MDGs. We have made our first steps as a donor country and assist in humanitarian missions”, said Plevneliev, cited by the daily 24 Chasa.

Plevneliev also talked about Bulgaria’s commitments to the Europe 2020 Strategy for energy diversification and sustainable management of natural resources. He said that the advancement of green technologies is a key element of the national program Bulgaria 2020.

Participants in the forum included UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, US State Secretary John Kerry and Bill Gates.
