Bulgarian national team footballer Todor Nedelev could miss next month’s crucial qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, against Armenia and the Czech Republic.

The 20-year old winger of Botev Plovdiv suffered an injury in last week’s 6-0 Bulgarian Cup victory over Neftochimic Burgas. Nedelev underwent a magnetic resonance imaging, which showed a fracture on his ankle. His club has decided to send him to Germany for further check-up and treatment, reports private channel bTV.

The initial prediction of a 1-month recovery now seems rather optimistic, and the youngster may be sidelined until the end of the year. This would mean that national team coach Lyuboslav Penev will not be able to use him in Bulgaria’s decisive qualifiers for the World Cup and for the possible play-offs in November.

Todor Nedelev has been making the headlines in recent months. His strong performances for Botev in the domestic league and in the Europa League qualifying matches put him in the spotlight of many European clubs. This earned him a preliminary contract with German Bundesliga side FSV Mainz 05.

The winger is expected to join his new club in January 2014. This could also mean that if the injury is as serious as predicted, he will not play anymore matches for Botev.
