Swiss voters overwhelmingly rejected a plan for the abolition of military conscription at a referendum on Sunday.

According to exit poll results, as cited by private Bulgarian TV station bTV, 73% of the voters rejected the proposal put forth by pacifists and left-wing parties.

Only 27% of Swiss voters are said to have backed the abolition of mandatory military service.

The idea for the referendum was put forth by the Group for Switzerland without an Army, which proposed the abolition of conscription or its replacement by voluntary army service or a small professional army.

The proposal to put an end to military draft was opposed by right-wing parties, the Parliament, and the cross-party government.
