A state-owned dormitory in a village near Bulgaria's northwestern city of Pleven may accommodate up to 200 Syrian refugees if it undergoes repair works worth around BGN 1 M, according to Pleven Mayor Dimitar Stoykov.

In a Sunday interview, he specified that Pleven was among the cities picked by the government as locations of refugee accommodation centers.

Stoykov, as cited by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency, vowed to present his idea about the dormitory in the village of Beglezh at an extraordinary closed-doors sitting of the Municipal Council on Thursday.

He argued that the building, located 25 km away from Pleven, was convenient and offered sports facilities.

Stoykov emphasized that he had inspected the entire territory of the municipality and had found no building which was more suitable.

"We are an EU country, we have commitments, we must accept the citizens in need and they must be provided with shelter," Stoykov said.

He noted, however, that Bulgaria needed financial assistance from the EU in order to cope with the increasing refugee numbers.

Stoykov said he had been assured by Prime Minister Oresharski and the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the matter that Pleven would receive money to address the issue and increased police presence to guard the refugee center.
