A European Parliament delegation is to arrive in Bulgaria's southeastern town of Svilengrad on Thursday to inspect border control at the border with Turkey.

The probe is to establish whether Bulgaria and Greece are guarding external EU borders efficiently, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Television (BNT).

Although the increase in refugee flows in Bulgaria is not an element of the inspection, MEPs will examine the situation at the Transit Center for Refugees in the village of Pastrogor, which has been full to the brim for several weeks.

The EP delegation will also check the functioning of facilities bought with EU funds at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing and examine results in the sphere of combating smuggling.

On Wednesday, the delegation met with Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev, who expressed Bulgaria's readiness to join the Schengen Area.

The EP delegation, led by German MEP Jens Geier, brings to together members of the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee, which is responsible for the control of the implementation of the Union's budget.
