Bulgaria is facing its biggest humanitarian crisis for the last 70-80 years, according to the President of the Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) Hristo Grigorov.

The BRC launched on Wednesday a National Charity Campaign in Support of Refugees in Bulgaria. Donations can be made by SMS to the number 1466 (BGN 1 through any mobile operator), as well as online at BRC's official website. Donations by bank transfer can be made to BRC's account in Unicredit Bulbank: BG06UNCR76301000030265 UNCRBGSF. Material donations are being accepted around the BRC's national offices.

The collected funds will be used to open refugee soup kitchens, as well as for covering other basic needs.

Grigorov specified that Bulgarian Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski had urged the BRC to request financial aid from the Red Cross headquarters in Geneva and was optimistic that the funds would be provided.

Since the beginning of the refugee crisis in the country, the BRC has supplied the State Agency for Refugees (SAR) with diapers, clothes, mattresses, sleeping bags, pillows, towels, portable beds, sheets, and quilts.

The SAR has also received food donations from BRC, amounting to BGN 14 15.84. The BRC has also made direct contributions to the refugee reception centers of the Ministry of Interior. These include clothes, children's toys, cutlery, sleeping gear, and other items of primary need.
