Bulgaria's capital, Sofia, has been selected as the starting point for the Freedom Challenge international bike ride which aims to raise awareness about human trafficking on a European level, according to the organizers of the event.

Sofia is said to have been chosen as a starting point because of the substantial efforts of the country over the past few years in the sphere.

The participants in the race organized by the A21 Campaign, an international anti-human-trafficking organization, will cross 10 countries in 11 days along one of the toughest bike routes in Europe.

The international team of cyclists will ride on some of the same routes traffickers are using to move their victims across Europe.

The race starts in Sofia, Bulgaria, on October 6, 2013, and will finish Wednesday, October 16, in London, UK.

The start of the bike ride in Sofia has been scheduled for 10 am at Alexander Battenberg Square.

The participants in the race are to be joined by a group of several thousand Bulgarian cyclists who will accompany them on a symbolic bike ride across downtown Sofia.

The Bulgarian start of the initiative is organized in partnership with the National Commission for Combating Human Trafficking and the sponsorship of Aurubis Bulgaria.

Over 11 days, riders will cycle at least 100 km in each leg, and 145 km on the longest day.

The highest pass is at Grossglockner, Austria. The cyclists will ride 48 kilometers of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 meters.
