UN Chem Arms Report Handed to Ban Ki-moon

The findings of UN weapons inspectors are expected to be made public Monday as the Security Council will attempt to turn the US-Russian outline on Syria's chemical weapons into a concrete plan.

UN chemical weapons inspectors have already handed their report into an alleged sarin gas attack in Syria to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Ban is scheduled to brief the Security Council on the report in a closed-door session Monday morning and two diplomats told CNN the report is likely to be released publicly at that time.

It is expected it will confirm chemical weapons have been used in Syria's civil war, but may not finger a perpetrator.

The UN inspectors' primary task was simply to confirm the attack occurred and if so, identify the agent used. However, according to ABC, the paper will reportedly suggest that only Assad's military has the capability to carry out such a wide-scale strike.

Regardless of whether the report identifies who is to blame, Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said Friday it will be "an overwhelming report" and that the Assad government has "committed many crimes against humanity."

"Therefore, I'm sure that there will be surely the process of accountability when everything is over," he said.

The report comes on the heels of agreement reached Saturday in Geneva between US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on the eradication of Syrian chemical weapons stockpile.

International media reported that the agreement will be backed by a UN Security Council resolution that could allow for sanctions or other consequences if Syria fails to comply.

Kerry said the first international inspection of Syrian chemical weapons will take place by November, with destruction to begin next year.

He met Sunday with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. From Israel, Kerry traveled to Paris for discussions about Syria on Monday with French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius and British Foreign Secretary William Hague. The Turkish and the Saudi foreign ministers will also be in Paris.

The US accuses the Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad of killing hundreds in a sarin gas attack in a Damascus suburb on August 21.

Assad's government denies the allegations and has blamed the rebels of carrying out the attack.

More than 100 000 people have died since the uprising against President Assad began in 2011. Millions of Syrians have been displaced.
