British Foreign Secretary William Hague has welcomed the deal reached Saturday by the United States and Russia on a plan to eliminate Syria's chemical weapons.

Hague said on Twitter that urgent work would now take place to implement the plan.

The British Foreign Secretary is due to travel to Paris on Monday to discuss the issue with US Secretary of State John Kerry and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius.

Hague said in a statement that his discussions with Kerry and Fabius on Monday would cover "the way forward, including action at the United Nations Security Council".

He added: "The onus is now on the Assad regime to comply with this agreement in full. The international community, including Russia, must hold the regime to account.”

John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Saturday that they had agreed on a plan to secure and destroy Syria's chemical weapons by mid-2014. If Syria fails to comply, the deal could be enforced by a UN resolution backed by the threat of sanctions or military force.
