No Charges for Driver Who Rammed Turkish Embassy in Bulgaria

A man who rammed his car into the Turkish Embassy in Bulgaria faces criminal charges, it emerged on Friday, a day after the incident.

Initial investigative procedures have concluded that Marcho Zhekov suffers from a mental illness - paranoid schizophrenia, which is the reason why he can not be indicted, Sofia City Prosecutor’s office announced.

The crash occurred Thursday afternoon in downtown Sofia. Witnesses said the driver, at the wheel of an Audi, made a sharp turn into the building.

Marcho Zhekov, 35, turned himself in, telling police officers that he had sought to avenge the murder of his brother in Turkey which had taken place some time ago.

The man was arrested and taken to the 1st Regional Police Department in Sofia.

He has a criminal record for inflicting bodily harm.
