Jews across the world are celebrating Friday and Saturday their greatest religious holiday, Yom Kippur, as superstitious Christians fear Friday the 13th.

2013 has the sinister date twice, in September and December. Friday the 13th occurs 1-3 times each year.

Misfortunes are supposed to happen more frequenly on such a day, which is generally considered as bearing an ill moment.

In contrast, the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, known also as the Day of Atonement and the Sabbath of Sabbaths, is a day of purification and return to one's spiritual roots.

It includes strict fasting and intensive prayer, with even non-believing Jews often visiting the synagogue.

Yom Kippur is the culmination of ten days of spiritual concentration during the traditional Jewish seventh month.

In 2013, it is celebrated from sundown Friday until sundown Satruday, September 13-14.
