Netherlands' Wilders Protests against Bulgarian, Romanian Workers

Dutch right-wing populist Geert Wilders protested against the drop of working restrictions on Bulgarian and Romanian migrants in front of the Romanian Embassy in the Hague.

In an interview at the Romanian Embassy, Wilders, the leader of the Dutch Party of Freedom, claimed that many Dutch people are afraid that crime rates will increase when the Netherlands opens its borders to Bulgarian and Romanian employees January 1.

At the time when Wilders' protest took place, a high level meeting discussing the issues of migration in the EU was held at the Romanian Embassy in the Hague.

Dutch liberal MEP Hans van Baalen explained that the boost of Romanian economy aids the EU and hence the Netherlands.

The restrictions on Bulgarian and Romanian migrants formed part of the treaty under which the two countries entered the European Union in 2007.

The existing member states were given seven years to phase in full access to other countries' domestic labor markets.
