Ashton: Russia's Syria Proposal Is 'Interesting'

The EU is closely considering Russia's proposal for the placement of Syria's chemical arsenal under international control, stated the Union's top diplomat Catherine Ashton.

The propsal is interesting, but it must be also confirmed it is feasible, said a spokesman for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

"It is vital that this is a serious proposal and it will be followed through and respected by all parties," said spokesman Michael Mann.

He added that "everyone must rapidly commit to the proposal" if the proposal is to be broadly accepted. "We have to be convinced that everybody will work seriously on this proposal," he said.

The EU's foreign affairs ministers have already condemned the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and have said that there are reasons to believe it was perpetrated by forces of President Bashar Al-Assad.

Earlier Tuesday, Germany's Minister of Foreign Affairs Guido Westerwelle said the Russian proposal offers "a new chance for a political solution," warning, however, not to put too much hope into this chance.

Separately, the EU said it is disbursing EUR 58 M to Lebanon to help the country deal with the impact of the Syrian conflict which has created around 2 M refugees.

Syria has already stated that it accepts the Russian plan, with details to be fleshed out in ongoing talks.
