Bulgaria's 2012 Exports Up 2.5% Y/Y - Final Data

In 2012, Bulgaria exported goods for BGN 40.6 B, which is by 2.5% higher, compared to 2011.

This is the final data on foreign trade for 2012, released by the National Statistics Institute, NSI, on Tuesday.

Compared to the same month of the previous year, the largest growth was observed in May (by 11.1%) and the largest fall in January (by 8.0%).

Imported goods in 2012 amounted to BGN 49.8 B (at CIF prices) or 8.8% more than in the previous year.

In 2012, compared to the corresponding month of 2011, the largest growth was observed in May - 21.7% and falls were reported in September (by 3.3%) and December (by 2.1%). The tendency the imports to be higher than the exports continued in 2012.

Foreign trade balance (exports FOB - import CIF) was negative in 2012 and amounted to BGN 9.2 B, which was BGN 3.0 B more than the balance in 2011.

At FOB/FOB prices (after elimination of transport and insurance costs on imports), the negative balance for 2012 added up to BGN 6.8 B.

The exports of Bulgaria in 2012, distributed according to the Standard International Trade Classification, showed an increase in most sections, compared to 2011.

The largest growth was recorded in the section „Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (by 23.7%). The most notable fall was reported in the section "Crude materials, inedible (except fuel)" (by 10.4%).

In imports, the largest growths were recorded in the sections: „Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (by 17.9%) and "Animal and vegetable oils, fats and waxes" (by 15.8%). Fall was reported in the section "Crude materials, inedible (except fuel)" (by 3.1%).

In 2012, exports of Bulgaria to EU countries decreased by 3.5% compared to the previous year and amounted to BGN 23.8 B.

The main trade partners of Bulgaria were Germany, Italy, Romania, Greece, France, Belgium and Spain which accounted for 75.6% from the exports to EU.

Bulgarian imports from EU countries in 2012 increased by 7.4% compared to the previous year and added up to BGN 29.2 B. The largest amounts were reported for goods imported from Germany, Italy, Romania, Greece and Spain.

The foreign trade balance (exports FOB - import CIF) of Bulgaria with EU countries was negative and amounted to BGN 5.4 B.

The exports of Bulgaria to EU, distributed according to the Standard International Trade Classification, showed that in 2012, compared to 2011, the largest increase was observed in exports from the section „Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (by 22.1%). The largest increase in imports from EU was observed also in section „Mineral fuel, lubricants and related materials" (by 42.4%).

In 2012, Bulgarian exports to third countries increased by 12.4% compared to the previous year and added up to BGN 16.8 B. The main trade partners of Bulgaria were Turkey, Gibraltar, China, the Russian Federation and Serbia which accounted for 49.8% of the total exports to non-EU countries.

Bulgarian imports from third countries in 2012 increased by 10.7%, compared to the previous year, and amounted to BGN 20.6 B. The largest amounts were reported for goods imported from the Russian Federation, Turkey, China and Ukraine.
