Obama to Address US Nation on Syria Tuesday

US President Barack Obama said Friday he will address the American people on Tuesday about the situation in Syria, a move that will aim to persuade Congress to back a military strike.

"I will make the best case that I can," he told reporters at the end of the G-20 summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, as cited by USA Today.

Obama declined to say whether he would order an attack against Bashar Assad's government even if Congress rejects authorization, saying he did not want to "jump the gun and speculate."

The US President acknowledged that "it's conceivable at the end of the day I don't persuade a majority of the American people that it's the right thing to do - and then each member of Congress is going to have to decide."

Obama wants to strike against the Syrian regime in response to a chemical attack on civilians last month that the Obama administration says was carried out by Assad's military.

The US and Russia have not bridged their differences over the issue of possible military action in Syria, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the G20 summit. Putin said G20 members Russia, China, India, Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Italy oppose foreign military intervention in Syria, while the United States, Turkey, Canada, Saudi Arabia and France are backing an attack on Assad.
