The EU needs to move away from its managerial profile and to get serious about its future as a true political entity, argued Bulgarian socialist MEP Ivaylo Kalfin.

Kalfin, along with other EU politicians, met with EC President Jose Manuel Barroso ahead of Barroso's annual state of the union address.

"Crisis management alone, without a clear and comprehensive vision for the future cannot generate public support and can easily lead to frustration with politics," stated Kalfin

"The next European elections should not be about crisis management but about the future," added the S&D MEP.

Kalfin strongly argued that politicians, and in particular those from EU institutions, need to move away from the image of managers and provide a deeper strategic vision.

"The EU is about power. It is about potential. In a globalized world, the national solutions hardly work," said the Bulgarian MEP.

"I expect the EU to create rules that maintain financial stability, to stimulate competitiveness, to protect better the EU interests in the international relations. This means more decision making powers, more discipline and a higher budget," argued the Party of European Socialists Representatives.

"This is the type of Europe I need - not to solve all my problems but to be able to defend my interests. Therefore, single currency, banking union, fiscal union, the social pillar matter to me. The EU can be much more efficient in these areas than any national government," said Kalfin.
