Bulgaria’s Parliament has passed a declaration endorsing wrestling's bid to remain in the Olympic program after the sport was nominated for exclusion from the 2020 Games.

A total of 136 MPs votes in favor of the declaration, while 3 abstained.

The declaration expressed “regret and bewilderment” at the International Olympic Committee’s proposal to remove wrestling from the Olympic calendar.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) cut the ancient sport from the 2020 Games in February, triggering outrage in global wrestling circles.

In May, IOC included wrestling on a shortlist of three sports vying for a place at the 2020 Games, which will be held in either Tokyo, Madrid or Istanbul. Squash and a joint baseball and softball bid are the other finalists.

The IOC will make a final ruling in September in Buenos Aires.

Bulgaria is a major force in wrestling, with Bulgarian wrestlers having won a total of 68 Olympic medals over the years, including 16 gold.
