Bulgarian MPs Snub Bomb Alert as Tensions Rise Outside Parliament

Bulgaria’s lawmakers were unperturbed early on Wednesday, as an anonymous bomb threat was received for the Parliament’s building.

Parliament Chair Mihail Mikov informed the MPs about the anonymous bomb call, asking them if they would propose to abort the sitting – but no one reacted.

Meanwhile, a group of approximately 15 people, allegedly anti-government protesters, tore down part of the fence surrounding the Parliament.

No clashes between protesters and riot police have been reported so far.

Wednesday marks the first day of Bulgaria’s new political season, with lawmakers returning to work amid escalating tensions.

Anti-government protesters and government supporters have both gathered outside the Parliament in downtown Sofia, with the latter arriving on chartered buses from all over the country early on Wednesday.

Supporters of the opposition center-right GERB party of former PM Boyko Borisov have also arrived on chartered buses in the capital, attempting to join the non-affiliated anti-government protesters. Many protesters, however, have distanced themselves from the GERB group.
