Israeli President Shimon Peres has supported US President Barack Obama’s decision to seek congressional approval for a strike on Syria.

“I’m confident the US will respond against Syria,” Peres said today in an interview on Army Radio, as cited by Bloomberg.

“I don’t think sound judgment is indecisiveness; I think it’s permitted to carefully consider a decision beforehand rather than after, and I trust him on anything connected to Israel.”

Obama said Saturday he will ask the US Congress to authorise military action against Syria over an alleged chemical attack, lifting the threat of immediate strikes on President Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has refrained from commenting on the US delay, stressing instead his country’s ability to defend itself against possible retaliation following action in Syria.
