Bulgaria's police is fully prepared to apply adequate force whenever the security of Bulgarian citizens is under threat, stated Bulgarian Deputy-PM and Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev.

Yovchev was alluding to the possible imminent resuming of large-scale anti-government rallies in capital Sofia with the end of Parliament's recession Wednesday.

"The police have no order to use violence, but if they have to defend Bulgarian citizens, they will use force within the limits of the law," said Yovchev in an interview for TV7 Sunday.

The Minister of Interior confirmed that the investigation regarding the July 23 riots around Parliament is under way.

"We are looking at 39 persons who acted questionably. Some of them will be charged, in accordance with the law," said Yovchev.

He also added that the internal investigation regarding possible cases of police brutality in the protests is also making progress.

However, the Bulgarian Vice-PM was resolute that whether the cabinet falls or stays depends on Parliament, not on those in the streets.

"There can always be some people that are not happy with a government. But if we yield to the pressure of a handful of provocators, where will we go?" said Yovchev.

"In that case, we would be creating a dangerous precedent. This is not good democracy," added he.
