China Cautions US, France on Syria Intervention

Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi has made clear his country's position that no interference should take place in Syria without a UN sanction.

Friday Wang talked to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, saying China awaits the results of the ongoing UN investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict.

"Before the investigation finds out what really happened, all parties should avoid prejudging the results, and certainly ought not to forcefully push for the Security Council to take action," Wang told Ban, as reported by Xinhua.

"A political resolution is still the only way out," added the Chinese top diplomat, thus implicitly opposing the US bid for military intervetion.

Wang also talked to French counterpart Laurent Fabius, whose country has also backed calls for swift military intervention

"It must not only be ascertained if chemical weapons were used, but even more important is determining who used them," said the Chinese Foreign Minister.

In addition, Xinhua reports Friday Wang called German Foreign Affairs Minister Guido Westerwelle, whose country has in contrast favored the diplomatic approach to the Syrian crisis.
