The US government will release Friday a declassified version of its intelligence report backing up a government assessment that the Syrian regime was responsible for a chemical weapons attack last week.

A senior administration official has also told CBS News that the administration would go public with its legal justification for taking military action against the Syrian regime if and when President Barack Obama orders a strike.

The announcement comes amid talk among major powers of a military response against the forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Hopes that Britain would join any US military action were dashed late Thursday when Prime Minister David Cameron lost a non-binding vote in the House of Commons to endorse that policy.

The US, which had warned that Assad would be crossing a "red line" if chemical weapons were used, said it was still seeking an "interventional coalition" for possible strikes on Syria while reserving the right to act alone.
