Bulgarian Socialists 'Pleased' with Roger Waters Agenda

The Bulgarian Socialist party, BSP, in an unusual move, sent Thursday information to the media about part of the schedule of rock legend Roger Waters.

Roger Waters, the creative force behind Pink Floyd's hit album "The Wall," arrived in Bulgaria on a flight from Bucharest Wednesday evening.

He will stage his rock opera "The Wall" in the Bulgarian capital Sofia on Friday, August 30, at the Vassil Levski national stadium.

The Socialists' press office insisted on informing that "Today, August 29, Rodger Waters, bassist and vocal of Pink Floyd, will visit the tomb of British Major Thompson near Litakovo from 3:30 pm and 4 pm. Thompson perished in Bulgaria during World War II."

It remains unclear if BSP functionaries are going to join Waters.

Political parties don't send information on celebrity performances in Bulgaria, but this press release has been certainly prompted by the fact that Major William Frank Thompson was a hero and also a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain.

He was a British officer who acted as liaison between the British Army and the Bulgarian communist and antifascist partisans during World War II.

On January 25, 1944, along with three other commandos, Major Thompson was sent on a parachute landing mission to establish a link between the British staff and the Bulgarian partisans (fighters) led by Slavcho Transki; he landed near Dobro Pole, Macedonia.

On May 23 the same year, Thompson took part in the clash at the village of Batuliya between the Bulgarian Gendarmerie and the Second Sofia Brigade of National Liberation of the Partisans. Some of the partisans were killed, while he was wounded by the gendarmerie forces, captured and interrogated by military intelligence.

Major Thompson, along with two others - a Bulgarian partisan and yatak (supporter of partisans), was executed by firing squad in the nearby village of Litakovo.

After the war and the establishment of the Communist regime in Bulgaria, several nearby villages were merged and renamed Thompson in the British officer's honor.
