The idea to ban the large retail chains in Bulgaria from working on weekend days was just mentioned as an option and no one intended to make it into a law, according to the person who voiced it one day ago.

"We are only seeking ways to regulate relations between Bulgarian manufacturers and the large retail chains in order to protect Bulgarian interests," the Member of the Parliament from the Socialist-led Coalition for Bulgaria, Spas Panchev, told the public radio on Wednesday.

His comments came on the heels of media publications informing lawmakers from the ruling Bulgarian Socialist Party, BSP, were planning to ban the large retail chains in the country from working on weekend days in order to boost smaller stores.

Panchev said the above idea was presented as a possibility in the bid to encourage small business in the country.

The Chairman of the Association for Modern Retail, Yordan Mateev, explained that the so-called "Green Book" on unfair practices, compiled by the European Commission, did not involve just large retailers as such practices could be found in the entire chain, including manufacturers.

"The "Green Book" explains that national legislation on the issue not only cannot help, but can be harmful," said Mateev.

The idea to restrict weekend business hours of large retailers was blasted and ridiculed in mass on social networks.
