The toddler who fell 10 meters down on an escalator in a Bulgarian shopping mall a week ago is now conscious and breathing on his own.

Until now, the 4-year-old boy was kept in drug-induced coma. He was taken out of it Tuesday and his body has reacted well.

Stefan is still very sleepy from the drugs. The child responds well doctors' commands and understands what they say. The medical team continues to infuse drugs to limit the swelling of the brain and one of the lungs.

Despite the improvement, he remains in critical condition.

The incident happened on the evening of August 20th. The child was at the mall's daycare, but managed to leave unnoticed. He leaned on the escalator's moving railing and was dragged before falling 10 meters down.

The emergency ambulance took him to the local St Anna hospital.

There were three staff and the receptionist inside the daycare at the time. They have all been interrogated by the prosecutor's office in Varna, along with one manager of the company owner of the daycare.

The authorities are still probing the case.
