Veselin Ganev, newly-elected Chair of the Bulgarian Association of Traders of Agromachinery (BATA), has drawn attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the agricultural machinery fleet, stressing that the average age of tractors and combine harvesters used in the country is 18-19 years.

Ganev, as cited by Darik radio, explained Monday that Bulgaria needed more adequate statistical data on the number of tractors and combine harvesters and their depreciation level.

Georgi Bogoev from BATA claimed that Bulgaria took a bottom EU spot by level of agricultural mechanization.

He noted that the agriculture sector needed a range of machines, adding that upon reading statistics one had to take into consideration the energy efficiency of some pieces of equipment and the sheer number of others.

Bogoev emphasized that statistics had to be presented in such a way so as to lead to correct decisions and suggested that BATA would work actively to achieve this.

"According to rough statistics, around 80% of the tractors and 80% of the combine harvesters are past depreciation deadline. This means that the remaining clunkers functioning on the agriculture market are wasting grains, using up too much fuel and spare parts, and are inefficient for the owners of these machines. Bulgaria holds the bottom position, including among its neighboring countries, by agricultural mechanization," he commented.
