Former Egypt President Hosni Mubarak, who is facing trial on a number of charges, was released from arrest Thursday and transferred to a military hospital.

The move comes after Egypt's General Prosecution did not oppose a prior court decision to free Mubarak from his preliminary detention.

The former president, who resigned in February 2011 during Egypt's stage of the so-called Arab Spring, has been under arrest since April that year.

He has suffered from ill health during that period.

Mubarak is to face a second-instance hearing, after being sentenced to life in prison at first instance for killings during the unrest in 2011.

He will also face a first-instance trial on two counts of corruption.
