Bulgarian Police Ambitious to Solve High-profile Cold Cases

The Bulgarian Interior Ministry is launching a full revision of the high-profile gangland murder cases and contract killings in the country since 2001.

According to the Bulgarian news agency BGNES, the operation in the reopening of the cold cases has already started and is done jointly with the Prosecutor's Office and the State Agency for National Security, DANS.

BGNES cites its own unnamed sources telling them new leads, developments, and identifications of the killers could be expected very soon. The Interior has declined any comments.

BGNES further reminds that there was a meeting in June between Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Tsvetlin Yovchev, the Chief Secretary of the Interior, Svetozar Lazarov, Chief Prosecutor, Sotir Tsatsarov, and then-acting and now current DANS Director, Vladimir Pisanchev, stressing details of the plan to solve emblematic cold cases were most likely discussed at that time.

Meanwhile, Lazarov told the public radio Thursday the following:

"Currently we are going back and reexamining absolutely all cases for which we have new facts, evidence, witnesses etc. – we are checking all murder cases – gangland, contract, and domestic.
