Bulgaria’s weightlifter and two-time Olympic Champion, Norair Nurikyan, has been appointed head of the country’s state lottery board of directors.

The new appointments were announced on Monday by Bulgaria's Minister of Youth and Sport, Mariana Georgieva. She stressed that the appointments have been made on the grounds of sports merit of the candidates, not on their political experience and background.

The former Secretary General of the Bulgarian Olympics Committee, Belcho Ivanov, will serve as the lottery’s managing director.

Bulgarian rower and Olympic champion Zdravka Iordanova is one of the members of the Board of Directors.

The Bulgarian government will consider on Wedneday a proposal to increase the funds allocated for sports activities from the state Lottery, the major source of financing sports in Bulgaria.
