Say a wish because the annual Perseid meteors are set to put on a spectacular sky show over the next few days, one of the most popular events in the astronomical calendar.

The best astronomical events will light up the sky for the next five nights and will peak on the pre-dawn skies on both 12 and 13 August.

The only problem for skygazers in Bulgaria who manage to stay awake may be some clouds in the sky, the weather forecast shows.

The Perseids are generally considered the most active and reliable of the 64 meteor showers that Earth passes through every year. A recent Nasa study found that it offers the best chance out of all the meteor showers of seeing an ultra-bright meteor called a fireball.

Their name comes from the fact that meteors in this shower radiate from the direction of the constellation Perseus.

The Earth passed particularly close to Comet Swift-Tuttle in 1992, when the Perseids put on a spectacular display.

The meteor shower has since returned to normal. The comet will not approach so close again until around 2125.
