The ceremony which will hand over Iran's presidential office from Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to Hassan Rouhani has started in Tehran.

Saturday Rouhani formally approved as the country's new president by Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei.

Sunday he will swear in in front of parliament.

The 64-year-old moderate cleric will start his term in office in a complicated international and domestic situation.

Iran is plagued by economic hardship, caused in part by international sanctions and in part by a perceived mismanagement of some sectors of the economy.

Rouhani has already stated he will work towards mending Iran's relative isolation in the international scene.

Rouhani won the June 14 presidential election in Iran at the first round.
